About Meanjin
Meanjin (pronounced MEE-an-jin) translates to ‘spike’ and was the name given to the Central Brisbane area by the Turrbal people as reference to the spike of land on which the area is located.
The committee of Brisbane in 28 and its associates acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians. We recognise their cultures, histories and diversity and their deep connection to the lands, waters and seas of Queensland and the Torres Strait.
We acknowledge the Jagera people and the Turrbal people as the Traditional Custodians of Meanjin, the lands on which our event is located and where we meet, work and learn. We pay our respects to Jagera and Turrbal Elders past, present and emerging.
About the Artwork
The ‘Meanjin in 28’ logo developed by First Nations visual artist Tori-Jay Mordey is a skillful representation of what it is to have Worldcon come to Meanjin. It highlights the relationship between self and country held by First Nations Australians, and explores time, space, and land across speculative-fiction genres.
About the Artist
Tori-Jay Mordey is an established First Nation, Indigenous Australian artist and illustrator based in Meanjin/Brisbane. Growing up she openly shared both her Torres Strait Islander and English heritage, which is often reflected in her contemporary Indigenous art practice – producing work based around her family and siblings as a way of understanding herself, her appearance and racial identity.
Over the years Tori-Jay has hone her skills in digital illustrations, drawing, painting, print making and film while also expanding her skills as a mural artist. In her illustrative work Tori-Jay often enjoys exploring human connection in relation to love, loss and identity. She often draws in a surrealistic cartoon style to help visually capture these complexities of our emotions; distorting and exaggerating the characters in a way that helps express and expose their vulnerabilities while being vibrant and playful.
