Welcome to Brisbane
Our bid to welcome the world science fiction and fantasy community back to our shores to experience Australia for Worldcon 2028. If our bid is successful, we’ll be hosting Worldcon in the beautiful riverside city of Brisbane, the capital city of the state of Queensland.
Our proposed dates for Worldcon in Brisbane in 2028 are Thursday 27 to Monday 31 July, following a total solar eclipse right across Australia on 22 July 2028.
What’s Around
Brisbane and its surrounds have something for everyone. From the natural delights of the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and the City Botanic Gardens, to the 200ft Ferris Wheel of Brisbane, and the picturesque Story Bridge.
Just an hour’s bus ride away is the Gold Coast, home to tourist attractions and theme parks including Sea World, Dreamworld, Wet’n’Wild, and Warner Bros. Movie World.
Local SF History
Brisbane is home to a longstanding history of fan culture dedicated to science fiction and fantasy. Notably, Queensland Star Trek club ‘Quest,’ made Brisbane the annual convention venue of Conquest from 1982-2022.
The city has been the home of Pulp Fiction Press (speculative fiction specialists) for over a decade. Brisbane has also played host to the Australian National Science Fiction Convention and the Sci-Fi Theatre Festival.
A Slice of Paradise
Brisbane is a green, vibrant, and culturally diverse city, with plenty to see and do across the area. Brisbane features laid-back people, friendly service, and great food and entertainment. The subtropical climate means that even in July and August, we’ve got idyllic temperatures of 21°C (70°F) throughout the day.
Seaside bliss is nearby at the beachside town of Redcliffe, or you could take the ferry out to Stradbroke Island or Moreton Island. Both have great snorkelling options, and it’s a good time of year to see manta rays!
Getting Here
The Brisbane Airport is approximately 16 kilometers (about 10 miles) from the city center. This is a 30-minute bus ride or 20-minute drive from the International Terminal to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
There are many options for accommodation on the adjacent streets of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, ranging from cosy hostels to five-star hotels – whatever your budget and needs may be.
